Fall 2004 ACES Course Descriptions Session I C++ COMPUTER PROGRAMMING [9am - 4pm] [September 4 - October 30] Use and program computers emphasizing C++, a highly portable, modern programming language used in academia and industry. Also experience the information superhighway through the Internet. Learn to write and understand simple programs in the C++ language, as well as develop individual programs reflecting your own learning goals. Each Saturday session will build upon prior sessions without assignments between sessions. Time will be spent using state-of-the-art computer labs at Iowa State University, with small group activities and class discussions enhancing your learning experience. The course is flexible enough to allow you to continue advanced programming at a pace and level that is challenging to you.DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY [9am - 4pm] [September 4 - October 30] This voyage will take students into the future of photography-digital photography and image manipulation. The exciting world of digital imaging is everywhere you look, and you could be the digital artist of the new millennium! Learning the tools of the trade fundamentally, you will begin the process of creating you own digital portfolio. Take digital photographs and explore hands-on digital imaging to create anything you can imagine! Discover photo manipulation and restoration techniques that can be applied to a photograph. Working in a computer lab setting on group and individual projects, each student will learn to use Adobe Photoshop and other imaging software used by professionals in the field of print and media productions. Already know the basics of Photoshop? This course will give you the opportunity to continue to learn new secrets and more advanced techniques to challenge your computer and creative skills.MATHEMATICS [9am - 4pm] [September 4 - October 30] Using the DT-PI (Diagnostic Testing followed by Prescriptive Instruction) method, this course will accommodate your own individual style and speed of learning. You will be diagnostically pre-tested in a mathematics course (Algebra I; Algebra II; Geometry; Functions, Statistics, and Trigonometry; or Precalculus) and then coursework will be tailored to meet your individual needs. You will learn only those concepts you have not yet mastered which will allow you to move through the curriculum at an accelerated pace without sacrificing your understanding and your mastery of fundamental concepts. This course incorporates personalized instruction during your Saturday sessions with independent homework assignments completed between your sessions. |
